Here is a simple guide to Double Norwich Court Bob Major for beginners. I know this is right, because I'm a rank beginner. Firstly, the blue line:

Here are the simple rules that I've picked up (I've never tried to ring it as of writing). Follow the number 2 bell:
- What we're doing is treble bobbing, except we did a double dodge. This comes clearer next.
- As you approach the back (or later on, the front) remember what the last thing you did that was different from plain hunting. In this case, a was 5-6 up dodge (first time around).
If it was a dodge, you double dodge then lie/lead; if you made places, you lie/lead then double dodge. Like to like. This is easy!
- We now come to near places. The last thing we did was places (8th) so we'll start with places here. Within the nearest places that are neither the front nor the back you do far
places, near places, dodge and carry on.
- The last thing we did was dodge, so we know we're going to double-dodge when we get to the front, but we're also going to do the full work. Its just like treble bob, but you double
dodge on both sides of the lead (or lie, later).
- Now comes the far places. They're exactly the same as the near places only you do them in the furthest places that are neither the front or back places. Because the last thing we
did was a dodge (1-2), we start the places with the dodge. Then within the places we do far places, near places and continue on our way.
- Because we finished step 5 with places, we'll make places at the back followed by a double dodge.
- Go back to step 1, but now we're coming from the back. That's it!
So, the mantra is treble, near, full, far - treble, near, full far
Here are some observations (I'll add more after I've been more observant):
- The method is absolutely symmetrical between front and back. If someone drew you the blue line, but started where the bells are in the order 87654321 (halfway down the fourth
column above) then mirrored each row left to right, you get exactly the plain course.
- When you are doing near places, you come to the places first (they're nearer, see?) then dodge. When you're doing far places, the places are on the far side of the work, so you dodge first.
- I'm guessing that you'll panic as you approach the front or the back. You'll know whether it's dodge/lie or lie/dodge because of what you just did, but is it full? The answer to this
lies in the question: "did you pass the treble in the last two places before you got there?" (3-2 or 6-7).
If so, then you're doing the full work.
Another way to avoid the panic is to always attemp to do the full front/back work. If you meet the treble, that spoils the fun, so you're forced to do just one side of it.
- If the treble turns you from either the front or the back, you do near places. There's that front-back symmetry in action!
